Realistic Optimism (half-day)

Course Aim

The aim of the session is for delegates to learn how optimism can be of benefit personally and organisationally, and the skills associated with an optimistic outlook

Course objectives

By the end of the session, participants will be able to

  • State what we mean by ‘optimism’ (and pessimism)
  • Explain the relationship between thinking, feeling and behaving
  • Describe the 3 dimensions to the individual’s explanatory (thinking) style
  • Provide at least 3 ways optimism can help at the individual level
  • Say how optimism can benefit the organisation
  • State at least 3 techniques associated with fostering and maintaining optimism and resilience

Course details

This is a participative and interactive session, which explores the benefits having an optimistic outlook can bring and how optimism is a skill that can be learned, and improved with practice. The purpose of the session is for delegates to gain an understanding of how to harness the power of optimism, for their benefit, and for that of the organisation. We reflect on those factors that mitigate against our adopting and assuming a helpful outlook. The central message of the session is that individuals – and by extension organisations – are resourceful, and can learn and develop and grow with an optimistic mind-set. This is a practical session, with delegates learning and practicing a number of relevant skills and techniques. eleeleeleeess
